Develop Job Hunt Strategy to Improve Search for Candidates
Michelle D. Gladieux
The News-Sentinel Business Monday section, Ft. Wayne, IN

"Effective employee recruitment can be expensive and frustrating, but it doesn't have to be if you know how to market your company and where to look for potential employees. Small companies can be at an advantage. If your firm cannot compete with larger firms on salary, benefits, or career advancement, emphasize your intrinsic rewards: challenging, interesting jobs, a flatter organizational hierarchy, team atmosphere, flexible hours, etc.

Here are just a few of many paths to explore as you seek candidates:
  • Employee referrals - Your current employees are one of your best sources for qualified applicants.
  • Business college placement departments - Placement counselors will try to match your needs with their graduates' skills free of charge.
  • Internships - You get early access to potential candidates and assess their skills firsthand. The intern receives a realistic job preview, potentially reducing turnover if hired.
  • Job fairs - Inexpensively increase your company's visibility.
Make your effort and dollars count as you choose among recruitment strategies. Explore more than one path, and be open to revision."
